MLB and NHL have made it nearly impossible to be a fan of your local teams in the streaming era. Since Hulu (our streaming provider) dropped the Sinclair (formerly Fox) regional sports networks, we’ve essentially been shut out of watching local broadcasts of the Indians (are they officially the Guardians yet?) and Red Wings. It’s miserable. And while this article brings welcome news, it doesn’t sound like a solution will be available anytime soon. We might have to re-up with cable for now. Ugh.

Hutchinson is right — the GOP is at a “past v. future” crossroads. It’s a little weird, too, because its newest members, the Trumpers, want to steer it back to the past on instruction from their overlord, while some of its long-standing members, those that came to the party long ago for the core principles of fiscal responsibility and small government, realize they’ve been duped and are trying to move to the beyond the trump nightmare.

“Polyakov’s analysis suggested that the four quarks banded together for a glorious 12 sextillionths of a second before an energy fluctuation conjured up two extra quarks and the group disintegrated into three mesons.”

The contrast between the precision of “12 sextillitionths of a second” and the vagueness of “an energy fluctuation” that “conjures up two extra quarks” is somewhat hilarious. This is fascinating otherwise.

Some of my favorite photos I’ve taken over the years are of the boys doing something they love. For Jake, I think of all the photos I’ve taken of him flying…and these, the shots of him looking out the window, camera (app) in hand, on a commercial flight. The plane window always seems to do something amazing with the light, but his gaze out the window, which reminds me of his passion for flying, is why I love these shots so much.

I bet I’ve taken dozens of these over the years, and it never gets old. This one is special to me, though, because it’s one of the first I’ve been able to capture in probably two years as COVID has kept us grounded (it’s nearly the first — this is from our return flight and I did take a few on our outgoing flight).

And I suspect the mask Jake’s wearing will remind me of that in the future.

I love the window seat, but, for me, it’s the second best view on a plane.

This is the first.

Sometimes missed manual focus gives some interesting results. The dots of the cling graphics on the Disney gondola tricked the camera here a bit, but I do like the end result.

About today’s cover image — it’s from the Library of Congress, and appears to be from a government collection with no limitations on use. Boy there’s a lot of great public domain photographs just lying around in searchable, online collections. I need to start using more of these.

Renee, Jake, and I are headed down to Orland for a quick visit to the Food and Wine festival at Epcot. This is the first time we’ve been in an airport since, well, over eighteen months ago when covid brought the world to a standstill. I have to say, it feels really good to be traveling.

Jake and Renee assured me they’re both smiling beneath their masks.

This has always been one of my favorite views of Jake — watching him take pictures of planes from a window seat. He’s still a kid in a candy store every time we fly, and I love that. It’s been too long since I’ve seen it.

“But Nature’s survey suggests that even though researchers try to shrug off abuse, it might already have had a chilling effect on scientific communication. Those scientists who reported higher frequencies of trolling or personal attacks were also most likely to say that their experiences had greatly affected their willingness to speak to the media in the future....”

The pandemic, and our collective handling of it, has already had societal impacts that we fail to appreciate. A chilling effect on science, and its role in the distribution of knowledge, is disturbing. And that might not be the worst of it. Have we discouraged a generation of people from going into science as a career? Medicine? I don’t know, maybe it’s had the opposite effect in that regard. I have heard that applications to medical school are up. I didn’t expect that.

We took Teddy to the pet store again tonight. He’s still a bit of a crazy puppy, but he’s getting better. He certainly loves walking through that place — so many smells!

The 2021-2022 NHL season kicked off tonight with two games — Penguins v. Lightning and Golden Knights v. Kraken.

Yep, that’s right, the Kraken has been released! Seattle is back on the board with the league’s newest franchise. The expansion draft was quite friendly to them, too. Lots of talent there — should be fun to watch.

And watching hockey will be different this season, too! The NHL is no longer carrying streams inside its own app, farming that service out to ESPN+ this year. We’ll see how that goes, but I’m certainly not optimistic that we’ll be able to watch our local feed for all Red Wings games. And Hulu is no help, either, as apparently they have yet to re sign the regional sports networks.

Hockey is back, but so are my streaming frustrations.
