¶I don’t know much about cricket, but have often heard the comparison to baseball, which I love. I have to admit I’m a little intrigued by this. I’d like to try to watch some of these matches and learn more about it.

¶Cutting grass in April is a marathon that feels like a sprint. The first cut of the year always seems to land somewhere around the first week of April, and always makes me think of the marathon ahead — I’ll be cutting grass on a regular basis for the next six months. Then the April showers arrive and the grass starts growing uncontrollably. And wet grass doesn’t play well with the lawnmower, so I usually end up frantically cutting it whenever I can during April. And it’s always too long.
¶I just cut the front yard twice today - once at the second highest setting and once at the next lowest for good measure because I won’t get back to it until Wednesday…after it rains on Tuesday.
¶I can’t wait for July when it all burns out.

¶This is interesting, although sending urine samples off to a lab routinely sounds a bit prohibitive. Maybe an analytical toilet is in our future.

¶We’re about 2.5 weeks into the 2024 MLB season and the Guardians have the best record in baseball. Not bad for a young team with major pitching challenges, at least with respect to starters.

¶I’m no car designer, but the design for the accelerator on the Tesla Truck appears to be astonishingly bad. First, it’s a bit janky, apparently with a cover that slides over the main structural element of the pedal. Maybe that’s standard, but it feels a bit cheap. More importantly, though, the cover can slide forward on the pedal, wedging itself in the carpet and effectively locking the accelerator on the floor. That’s a problem.
¶“Pedal to the metal”? More like “metal off the pedal.”

¶There’s value in television that’s just…on. Always. It might be a generational thing, but we like having the tv on even when we’re not focused on a particular show. Background noise, I guess. We’ve watched the Harry Potter movies that way several times over the years, catching random bits here and there. And that’s not to mention Golden Girls, Fraser, Friends, and other series we ‘watch’ as we fall asleep at night. It’s interesting, and a little funny, to see a streaming service recognize this.

¶Maybe Space Force is not a joke after all. And the state of things sort of reminds me of the situation with self-driving cars. It’s not really about the technology - that’s, strangely enough, the easy part. The mindset and the culture are the things. And those are hard to change.

¶The amount was pegged at about $4M when the story broke a couple weeks ago as the Dodgers opened the season in Korea. Now federal investigators allege the theft totaled more than $16M. That’s an insane amount of money, which makes it more shocking if Ohtani truly was ignorant of the entire thing.

¶We had to cut down a tree in the backyard after it lost its hold in the ground. It started leaning over the fence a few weeks ago and it just wasn’t practical (and maybe not even possible) to save it. We labored over the decision a bit, but finally asked the arborist to cut it down the other day. They told me it would be a few weeks before they could get to it. I was surprised to see it gone when I came home from work today, and a bit shocked. I feel like I didn’t have a chance to give it a proper goodbye. Sad to see a tree go.

¶This has to be the greatest National Siblings Day celebration of all time - Josh and Bo Naylor each homered in the fourth inning of the Guardians game tonight. Cleveland even came back from a 0-5 deficit to win the game…on a walk off single by Bo in the 10th. Incredible.

¶Today is eclipse day. Perrysburg lies right in the path of totality, which is pretty exciting. I’ve seen at least one partial eclipse before (in 2017, I think), but I’ve never experienced totality. I’ve agonized over whether I wanted to photograph it or now, even scouted 6-7 spots around town and selected what I thought would make a cool composite photo (a spot down on the Maumee side of the river). In the last few days, though, I’ve decided against doing that because it would require me to stay in that spot for probably 5-6 hours and, more importantly, it would mean I wouldn’t experience the eclipse with Renee.
¶Once I thought of it that way, the decision was easy. Bring it on!

¶I managed to take a few photos during totality, with my phone. This is probably the best. It’s not great, but it’s enough to remind me of the event and the experience, and that I had no regrets in my decision to forego the big camera and simply be present in the moment. The few moments, really.

¶April is certainly doing its thing quite well this year. We had plenty of rain during the first week of the month, which helped the grass overgrow and prevented me from dealing with it. We had a couple of nice days this weekend, though, so I was able to cut the yard for the first time this year. The extra long grass meant extra draw on the battery, but I got it done.
¶Now we’re off to the races as I try to keep up with it over the next couple months.

¶This is sad to see, but not surprising in the least. I suspect we’ll see many more stories like this as gambling on college sports continues to grow.
¶The cynic in me wonders what odds FanDuel will give on whether or not the disgraced and fired former coach is “Individual 1.”

¶Turns out that to be boat-raced (or boatraced) is to get behind in a contest and never catch up. The definition in Urban Dictionary also adds that the being boat-raced means not just getting behind early, but being beaten badly.
¶I heard the term ‘boat-raced’ in connection with sports the other day, made a note to look it up later. I watch a lot of sports, but don’t recall hearing the term before yesterday. I’ve heard (and read) the term multiple simtes since, then, of course.
¶I finally researched it a bit this evening and was happy to find https://www.mikepope.com/blog/DisplayBlog.aspx?permalink=2581 on the meaning of the term on Mike Pope’s blog. Mike is a technical writer and editor, so I trust his information.
¶Now I can’t wait to use ‘boat-raced’ in conversation (and writing). I doubt I’ll be able to work it into a legal brief or patent application, but I’ll certainly be on the look out for the opportunity!

¶We are now in an age where people come on the internet to be the worst possible versions of themselves, and it’s an ugly sight to behold. Take the power back by building blogs and putting comment moderation in place.…It’s what the social web was originally about, and we desperately need to get back to that.
¶This is from December, 2022, but it hits the same today, in January, 2024, as it did then. I doubt personal blogging will ever return to the popularity it enjoyed in the early 2000s, which is what I think the author hopes for. I think it will essentially become the equivalent of ham radio, with a bunch of hobbyists keeping it alive.
¶And that’s fine with me.
