We had to cut down a tree in the backyard after it lost its hold in the ground. It started leaning over the fence a few weeks ago and it just wasn’t practical (and maybe not even possible) to save it. We labored over the decision a bit, but finally asked the arborist to cut it down the other day. They told me it would be a few weeks before they could get to it. I was surprised to see it gone when I came home from work today, and a bit shocked. I feel like I didn’t have a chance to give it a proper goodbye. Sad to see a tree go.

This has to be the greatest National Siblings Day celebration of all time - Josh and Bo Naylor each homered in the fourth inning of the Guardians game tonight. Cleveland even came back from a 0-5 deficit to win the game…on a walk off single by Bo in the 10th. Incredible.

Today is eclipse day. Perrysburg lies right in the path of totality, which is pretty exciting. I’ve seen at least one partial eclipse before (in 2017, I think), but I’ve never experienced totality. I’ve agonized over whether I wanted to photograph it or now, even scouted 6-7 spots around town and selected what I thought would make a cool composite photo (a spot down on the Maumee side of the river). In the last few days, though, I’ve decided against doing that because it would require me to stay in that spot for probably 5-6 hours and, more importantly, it would mean I wouldn’t experience the eclipse with Renee.

Once I thought of it that way, the decision was easy. Bring it on!

I managed to take a few photos during totality, with my phone. This is probably the best. It’s not great, but it’s enough to remind me of the event and the experience, and that I had no regrets in my decision to forego the big camera and simply be present in the moment. The few moments, really.

April is certainly doing its thing quite well this year. We had plenty of rain during the first week of the month, which helped the grass overgrow and prevented me from dealing with it. We had a couple of nice days this weekend, though, so I was able to cut the yard for the first time this year. The extra long grass meant extra draw on the battery, but I got it done.

Now we’re off to the races as I try to keep up with it over the next couple months.

This is sad to see, but not surprising in the least. I suspect we’ll see many more stories like this as gambling on college sports continues to grow.

The cynic in me wonders what odds FanDuel will give on whether or not the disgraced and fired former coach is “Individual 1.”

Seems like a sure thing to me.

I just learned about Steven Soderbergh’s annual list of things he read and watched in the previous year. I need to do something like this, partly to help me remember everything I read and partly in hopes that it might help me connect with other people reading the same or similar books.

Turns out that to be boat-raced (or boatraced) is to get behind in a contest and never catch up. The definition in Urban Dictionary also adds that the being boat-raced means not just getting behind early, but being beaten badly.

I heard the term ‘boat-raced’ in connection with sports the other day, made a note to look it up later. I watch a lot of sports, but don’t recall hearing the term before yesterday. I’ve heard (and read) the term multiple simtes since, then, of course.

I finally researched it a bit this evening and was happy to find https://www.mikepope.com/blog/DisplayBlog.aspx?permalink=2581 on the meaning of the term on Mike Pope’s blog. Mike is a technical writer and editor, so I trust his information.

Now I can’t wait to use ‘boat-raced’ in conversation (and writing). I doubt I’ll be able to work it into a legal brief or patent application, but I’ll certainly be on the look out for the opportunity!

We are now in an age where people come on the internet to be the worst possible versions of themselves, and it’s an ugly sight to behold. Take the power back by building blogs and putting comment moderation in place.…It’s what the social web was originally about, and we desperately need to get back to that.

This is from December, 2022, but it hits the same today, in January, 2024, as it did then. I doubt personal blogging will ever return to the popularity it enjoyed in the early 2000s, which is what I think the author hopes for. I think it will essentially become the equivalent of ham radio, with a bunch of hobbyists keeping it alive.

And that’s fine with me.

We watched Beverly Hills Cop last night with Jonathan and Renee’s parents. I remember that being one of the first (or at least one of the earliest) VHS tapes my parents bought for our new-fangled VCR when I was a kid. What a great movie. And it’s still great. Eddie Murphy is just naturally funny and engaging on screen.

As the movie ended, though, I also thought that it felt more like an episode than a movie. It’s action-packed, no doubt, but its density pales in comparison to the content of a modern marquee film. And, thinking about streaming series on Netflix and such, it feels like an episode, or more likely two, of a one or two season show.

It really gave me a reminder of how different today’s media is from that of my childhood. Despite that, though, there’s no looking down on that movie. It’s still wonderful.

The idea of spatial computing is intriguing, but I’m not interested until using it requires no more than a pair of eyeglasses, which I’ve worn every day for decades now. I’m glad some will adopt the early ski mask versions, though. We need them to get to the eyeglasses stage of spatial computing.

I’m happy to wait.

A roadtrip like this in the Spitfire might be a great goal for Jake.

Jake bought his Triumph Spitfire last year, at age 18, which would make him 68 on the 50th anniversary of that purchase (the same “purchase anniversary” of the Austin-Healey 3000 fetured in this WSJ article). The Triumph would be 100 (it’s an American market Mark III manufactured in January, 1970 — the month after I was born!). Maybe we’ll shoot for an earlier “purchase anniversary” to make a road trip with it. I’d like to be a part of it.

Christmas break is winding down. We’re taking Jake back to campus this morning, and Jonathan’s girlfriend flies out this afternoon. Jonathan will be here for another couple weeks, but the house is emptying.

Renee and I added a new square on the “we’re getting old” bingo card the other day: talking about this “emptying out,” she said something that sounded like something my grandma would have said: “I just like having a full house.”

R.I.P. David Soul.

I loved Starsky and Hutch as a kid, but I wasn’t old enough to think about the actors playing Starsky and Hutch. Or Huggie Bear. Or any role.

I do remember David Soul as Ben Mears in the tv mini-series for Stephen King’s ’Salem’s Lot, though. He was fantastic (as was that production).

The sound of that kid scratching on the window is one of the creepiest sounds I remember from childhood. And I can still hear it like it was yesterday. Don’t open the window!

Watching Black Panther tonight made me realize a few things about the Marvel movies. First, I lost touch with the Marvel universe somewhere along the way. Second, this might be one of my favorite supehero flicks of all time. Third, I probably need to start the movies from the beginning…someday.
