¶Wirth also created Modula-2, which was the first programming language that I studied officially. Sophomore year at The Ohio State University in 1989, I believe. Maybe junior year. I had played around with Basic before that, but not as part of a class of any sort.

¶Hockey players are just built different. We’re watching the Bruins play the Blue Jackets, and a Bruins player just left the ice with a busted (literally!) lip. He returned to play rather quickly, after some stitch work. The broadcast showed a segment from the on-ice reporter a few minutes later, showing a gloved hand holding a chipped tooth that they had located on the ice. Apparently it was more than a busted lip!

¶Alright, so here we are, officially in the doldrums. This post-holidays, pre-Spring stretch of weeks (months…) can be, well, blah, particularly here in the Midwest. The cloud cover never seems to move. Grey everywhere you look. Come on Spring!

¶Happy New Year, and Happy Public Domain Day! 2024 is a big one on the copyright front. Steamboat Willie, which I’ve always viewed as sort of an adolescent version of Mickey Mouse, is officially in the public domain as of today.
¶Copyright expiration pushes works into the public domain every January 1st, but this one certainly lands with a thud.
¶I’m sure we’ll see all sorts of interesting adaptations of Steamboat Willie in 2024. Should be fun to watch!

¶The weekend has been an utter disaster from a football perspective. The Buckeyes were embarrassed in the Cotton Bowl, and the Lions were robbed in Dallas on one of the worst officiating disasters I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe I’m about to write these words, but here’s hoping Alabama can beat Michigan to make things right.
¶At least the Browns are doing well. 2023 has been that strange of a football season!

¶Time to close the pool. I’m probably a couple weeks late, actually. It’s pretty cool out today, though, which makes it easier. I’m sitting and watching the shop vac do its thing right now. Sounds like the return lines are nearly empty…which means I’ll let a run for a bit longer to be sure.

¶It’s a beautiful morning. Supposed to be quite warm today and tomorrow, with highs in the 80s. Might be the last blast of summer, though, as a cold front is supposed to arrive on Friday and linger through the weekend.

¶Here’s our view looking toward the front of the ship, which is now headed Due East (they turn around and back into the port at Castaway Cay). So, we saw the sunrise this morning off both the front and the back of the ship. Pretty amazing.
¶I see a lot of beautiful sunsets, not as many beautiful sunrises. This rivals those I saw in Maine years ago. Truly stunning.

¶Renee didn’t like her first choice, “the blue one.” I don’t remember what it was, but one sip was enough for her to know she didn’t like it. Coincidentally, one sip of my espresso martini was enough for her to know she did like that. Very much, actually. “The blue one” was promptly abandoned and Renee received her own espresso martini minutes later.

North Atlantic Morning
¶I recorded this on our veranda during our last day at sea. It’s a couple of undisturbed minutes of the sounds of the ocean, recoded somewhere in the North Atlantic as we headed from Puerto Rico to the Bahamas. I recorded it at about 9:40 AM (Eastern). Visually, everything was perfect - sunshine and nothing but the ocean around us.

¶After leaving Castillo San Cristóbal, we walked the streets of Old San Juan a bit. What a beautiful place. Narrow streets lined with shops and restaurants, bright colors all around, and friendly people everywhere.
