We watched Beverly Hills Cop last night with Jonathan and Renee’s parents. I remember that being one of the first (or at least one of the earliest) VHS tapes my parents bought for our new-fangled VCR when I was a kid. What a great movie. And it’s still great. Eddie Murphy is just naturally funny and engaging on screen.

As the movie ended, though, I also thought that it felt more like an episode than a movie. It’s action-packed, no doubt, but its density pales in comparison to the content of a modern marquee film. And, thinking about streaming series on Netflix and such, it feels like an episode, or more likely two, of a one or two season show.

It really gave me a reminder of how different today’s media is from that of my childhood. Despite that, though, there’s no looking down on that movie. It’s still wonderful.

The idea of spatial computing is intriguing, but I’m not interested until using it requires no more than a pair of eyeglasses, which I’ve worn every day for decades now. I’m glad some will adopt the early ski mask versions, though. We need them to get to the eyeglasses stage of spatial computing.

I’m happy to wait.

The best managers will navigate the uncertainty that lies ahead in virtually every domain of the economy through smart, small experiments to figure out what works—an approach that is quietly on the rise, and that calls for an end to the either-or debates that leave company managers exhausted and no closer to success.

We’re experimenting at the firm, that’s for sure.

A roadtrip like this in the Spitfire might be a great goal for Jake.

Jake bought his Triumph Spitfire last year, at age 18, which would make him 68 on the 50th anniversary of that purchase (the same “purchase anniversary” of the Austin-Healey 3000 fetured in this WSJ article). The Triumph would be 100 (it’s an American market Mark III manufactured in January, 1970 — the month after I was born!). Maybe we’ll shoot for an earlier “purchase anniversary” to make a road trip with it. I’d like to be a part of it.

Christmas break is winding down. We’re taking Jake back to campus this morning, and Jonathan’s girlfriend flies out this afternoon. Jonathan will be here for another couple weeks, but the house is emptying.

Renee and I added a new square on the “we’re getting old” bingo card the other day: talking about this “emptying out,” she said something that sounded like something my grandma would have said: “I just like having a full house.”

R.I.P. David Soul.

I loved Starsky and Hutch as a kid, but I wasn’t old enough to think about the actors playing Starsky and Hutch. Or Huggie Bear. Or any role.

I do remember David Soul as Ben Mears in the tv mini-series for Stephen King’s ’Salem’s Lot, though. He was fantastic (as was that production).

The sound of that kid scratching on the window is one of the creepiest sounds I remember from childhood. And I can still hear it like it was yesterday. Don’t open the window!

Watching Black Panther tonight made me realize a few things about the Marvel movies. First, I lost touch with the Marvel universe somewhere along the way. Second, this might be one of my favorite supehero flicks of all time. Third, I probably need to start the movies from the beginning…someday.

Wirth also created Modula-2, which was the first programming language that I studied officially. Sophomore year at The Ohio State University in 1989, I believe. Maybe junior year. I had played around with Basic before that, but not as part of a class of any sort.

Hockey players are just built different. We’re watching the Bruins play the Blue Jackets, and a Bruins player just left the ice with a busted (literally!) lip. He returned to play rather quickly, after some stitch work. The broadcast showed a segment from the on-ice reporter a few minutes later, showing a gloved hand holding a chipped tooth that they had located on the ice. Apparently it was more than a busted lip!

Happy New Year, and Happy Public Domain Day! 2024 is a big one on the copyright front. Steamboat Willie, which I’ve always viewed as sort of an adolescent version of Mickey Mouse, is officially in the public domain as of today.

I’m sure we’ll see all sorts of interesting adaptations of Steamboat Willie in 2024. Should be fun to watch!

The weekend has been an utter disaster from a football perspective. The Buckeyes were embarrassed in the Cotton Bowl, and the Lions were robbed in Dallas on one of the worst officiating disasters I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe I’m about to write these words, but here’s hoping Alabama can beat Michigan to make things right.

At least the Browns are doing well. 2023 has been that strange of a football season!

Time to close the pool. I’m probably a couple weeks late, actually. It’s pretty cool out today, though, which makes it easier. I’m sitting and watching the shop vac do its thing right now. Sounds like the return lines are nearly empty…which means I’ll let a run for a bit longer to be sure.

It’s a beautiful morning. Supposed to be quite warm today and tomorrow, with highs in the 80s. Might be the last blast of summer, though, as a cold front is supposed to arrive on Friday and linger through the weekend.

Here’s our view looking toward the front of the ship, which is now headed Due East (they turn around and back into the port at Castaway Cay). So, we saw the sunrise this morning off both the front and the back of the ship. Pretty amazing.

I see a lot of beautiful sunsets, not as many beautiful sunrises. This rivals those I saw in Maine years ago. Truly stunning.

Renee didn’t like her first choice, “the blue one.” I don’t remember what it was, but one sip was enough for her to know she didn’t like it. Coincidentally, one sip of my espresso martini was enough for her to know she did like that. Very much, actually. “The blue one” was promptly abandoned and Renee received her own espresso martini minutes later.

North Atlantic Morning

I recorded this on our veranda during our last day at sea. It’s a couple of undisturbed minutes of the sounds of the ocean, recoded somewhere in the North Atlantic as we headed from Puerto Rico to the Bahamas. I recorded it at about 9:40 AM (Eastern). Visually, everything was perfect - sunshine and nothing but the ocean around us.
