¶We got up a bit early and went for a walk today. Beautiful weather, with birds chirping everywhere (and loudly!) while the sun rose. Great way to start the day.

¶But if I don’t know you, I honestly don’t care what you think, esp if it’s negative and has less than ten syllables total.
¶This is frustrating to me. I don’t know Dave Winer, and he certainly doesn’t know me. I’ve read his blog for years, though, and as a hobbyist developer, I’ve got nothing but respect and admiration for him and his foundational contributions to web publishing, distribution, and interoperability. I understand his main point here — he doesn’t care about spam comments and doesn’t want them associated with his content.
¶What frustrates me is the way he framed spammers as a subset of people he doesn’t know. He doesn’t care what spammers think, but he also doesn’t care what I think. This is the technorati attitude that has frustrated me since I started tinkering in web dev twenty plus years ago. I’ve now worked on Daystream in my spare time for over a decade. I have no formal education in software or web development. I’m a lawyer for crying out loud. I do this for fun and for my own personal growth and satisfaction. Mostly at night and on the weekends. I have no aspirations or even hopes of being viewed as relevant on the topics of web content publishing, distribution, and interoperability. Dave’s post tells me I have the right mindset on that. It’s a reminder that the technorati (the people, not the website) still exists and clearly remains a closed group that “[doesn’t] care what [outsiders] think.”
¶I’ll follow Dave’s lead and blame the spammers for this. They got us here, not him.

¶A discovery on par with the genesis of the mitochondria. That’s truly amazing. Of course, the presence of the mitochondria in the evolution of life is what allows us to view this discovery as something that “hold[s]…the potential to fundamentally change agriculture.”
¶Biology never ceases to amaze me.

¶After reading that article on bioluminescence, I figured I had to have some photos of the boys with lightning bugs (fireflies?). So, I searched the photos app on my phone for “lightning bugs” and it dutifully returned a series of five photos from over a decade ago. Pretty amazing.
¶This one shows Jake with fascinated by a ligtning bug resting on his hand (hard to see as it’s not illuminated).

¶Statistically speaking, bioluminescence first appeared on earth at least as early as 540 million years ago. That’s incredible, though there’s something in this article that I find even more remarkable - “Bioluminescence…has independently evolved at least 94 times in nature.” Talk about a winning strategy.

¶I’ve never understood the disdain people have for Apple’s FineWoven case and wallet. True, scratches leave a lasting impression, but, in my experience, the material has held up quite well. I’ve got a case and wallet on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, and really like both. The edges on the wallet have worn down to give a patina of sorts. There’s a small “permanent” scratch or two, but they haven’t weakened the structure of the thing at all and, honestly, seem to add to the overall weathered look. I really have no complaints, other than colors, etc.
¶I’ll be sad to see them go if the reports of their demise end up being accurate.

¶I felt old a few years ago when the eye doctor first explained progressive lenses to me. I remember saying “so…they’re trifocals,” to which he responded…”yes, they’ve been rebranded.”
¶Well, he made me feel old again at today’s visit, although this time without the humor. He explained the concept of “office glasses” to me. Essentially, office glasses have lenses with a larger zone for intermediate distances, and smaller zones for far and near distances (progressive lenses typically have a relatively large area for far distances, a smaller area for intermediate distances, and an even smaller area for near distances). You use your office glasses during the workday while most things you’re focusing on fall in the intermediate distance category. This reduces the time and strain involved in moving your head around to land things in the relatively small intermediate zone of “regular” trifocals (sorry, “progressives”). You leave your office glasses, well, at the office and switch to your regulars, and their larger zone for far away distances, for the drive home.
¶I hate that this makes perfect sense to me.

¶I noticed an interesting patent marking while waiting for my pupils to dilate in the eye doctor’s office this morning. I’ve never seen a marking with “Patents for” as the introductory language.
¶Those are some pretty ancient U.S. patent numbers, btw. The second one listed issued in 1966. Tried and true technology in the field of “fine adjustment of optical instruments,” I suppose.

¶Cutting grass in April is a marathon that feels like a sprint. The first cut of the year always seems to land somewhere around the first week of April, and always makes me think of the marathon ahead — I’ll be cutting grass on a regular basis for the next six months. Then the April showers arrive and the grass starts growing uncontrollably. And wet grass doesn’t play well with the lawnmower, so I usually end up frantically cutting it whenever I can during April. And it’s always too long.
¶I just cut the front yard twice today - once at the second highest setting and once at the next lowest for good measure because I won’t get back to it until Wednesday…after it rains on Tuesday.
¶I can’t wait for July when it all burns out.

¶We’re about 2.5 weeks into the 2024 MLB season and the Guardians have the best record in baseball. Not bad for a young team with major pitching challenges, at least with respect to starters.

¶I’m no car designer, but the design for the accelerator on the Tesla Truck appears to be astonishingly bad. First, it’s a bit janky, apparently with a cover that slides over the main structural element of the pedal. Maybe that’s standard, but it feels a bit cheap. More importantly, though, the cover can slide forward on the pedal, wedging itself in the carpet and effectively locking the accelerator on the floor. That’s a problem.
¶“Pedal to the metal”? More like “metal off the pedal.”

¶There’s value in television that’s just…on. Always. It might be a generational thing, but we like having the tv on even when we’re not focused on a particular show. Background noise, I guess. We’ve watched the Harry Potter movies that way several times over the years, catching random bits here and there. And that’s not to mention Golden Girls, Fraser, Friends, and other series we ‘watch’ as we fall asleep at night. It’s interesting, and a little funny, to see a streaming service recognize this.

¶Maybe Space Force is not a joke after all. And the state of things sort of reminds me of the situation with self-driving cars. It’s not really about the technology - that’s, strangely enough, the easy part. The mindset and the culture are the things. And those are hard to change.

¶The amount was pegged at about $4M when the story broke a couple weeks ago as the Dodgers opened the season in Korea. Now federal investigators allege the theft totaled more than $16M. That’s an insane amount of money, which makes it more shocking if Ohtani truly was ignorant of the entire thing.
