¶I just took my dad for a ride in the Spitfire. His reaction was the same as everyone else that I’ve had in the car – exhilaration. I could see it in his face…just fun, joy, and excitement. I’m really glad I got to do that with him. Now I have to get my mom out for a drive!

¶I didn’t sleep well last night. Not sure why. The nice thing is I can’t remember the last time I felt like I didn’t have a great night’s sleep. Hopefully it’s a one-time thing.

¶I taught Jonathan how to drive the Spitfire today, putting him into the small percentage of young people who can drive a manual transmission. We talked afterwards about how much more fun it is to drive than an automatic. Yep - when you know, you know!
¶Now both boys can drive a car with a manual stick shift. I’m considering that a point of pride as a father!

¶It’s time to pick my next book to read. I make this process a little too complicated, treating as if I’m facing a decision that commits me to a years-long relationship. It’s a few-weeks, tops, and should be a relatively easy decision. I’ll decide by tonight.

U-M's Moore violated NCAA rules, NOA draft says (espn.com)
¶The draft, which could be subject to change, states Moore could face a show-cause penalty and possibly a suspension for allegedly deleting a thread of 52 text messages with former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions in October 2023 on the same day that media reports revealed Stalions was leading an effort to capture the playcalling signals of future opponents.
¶If you’re wondering how much college sports have changed over the last several years, just read this story and then look for the outrage. I’ll save you the effort - there is none. Indeed, commentators are mocking the report, saying “no one respects the NCAA” (Paul Finebaum). If true, at a minimum, Moore (attempted to) destroy evidence directly related to a matter that he knew, or should have known, would ultimately be investigated by at least his governing body…and potentially law enforcement.
¶Even if the media isn’t outraged, you have to wonder where the outrage is from the University of Michigan, the high and mighty institution that loved to look down its collective nose at Ohio State when Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes were investigated for tattoo gate, a tame situation by any comparison. Just a decade ago, alumni would have called for Moore’s firing as a matter of school pride and the school would have swiftly granted the request.
¶Not today.
¶I can’t wait for the season to start. Watching the Wolverines play the victim will be almost as much fun as watching the Buckeyes reestablish their dominance over that team up north.

¶I’m trying to avoid negativity that creeps into my mind from silly things, like being stopped by a train. I feel like I haven’t had to wait for a train in a long time and, when caught by this one on the way home tonight, immediately felt a bit of disgust creeping in. I caught it though and then sort of marveled at the train for a bit. The graffiti was interesting to look at…pretty amazing, actually. It turned out to be a fairly long train, but I didn’t mind. Five minutes maybe? Such a dumb source of frustration…and such a welcome diversion.

¶We decided at the last minute to go to the Guardians game today. They’re playing the Orioles, with first pitch at 1:40 PM. Cleveland has the best record in baseball, being the first team to reach 67 wins. Baltimore is right behind them, though, with 66 (as are the Yankees). Today’s game is the last in a four game series between the two. Cleveland took the first two but was quite anemic in yesterday’s game. Hopefully they take the series today.

¶St. Pete appears to be getting brushed by the right side of Tropical Storm Debby this morning. The patio camera went offline, so I’m not able to watch it live. Hopefully we’ll get some updates from the folks at the condo over the next couple days – they’re usually quite good about getting information out to folks.
¶Meanwhile, we’re enjoying breakfast poolside on an absolutely perfect Sunday morning at home. These contrasts between weather at different locations always amaze me, and remind me of the dynamics of weather.

¶In the letter, these organizations specifically call out X for its “persistent failings” in moderating unlawful distribution of copyrighted material. The letter makes it clear that this problem is unique to the platform since Musk’s acquisition.
¶Copyright infringement is the dark side of the Twitter/X dumpster fire. Extremism and disinformation have garnered most of the spotlight since Musk’s arrival, but copyright infringement has burned steadily the whole time. Maybe copyright law will force him to make some changes.

¶The forecast over the last few days called for a rainy weekend. Looks like we got it all yesterday and overnight. It’s shaping up to be a beautiful Saturday and, right now, tomorrow appears to be more of the same.
¶It’s a different story in St. Pete, though. Tropical Depression Four is just off of Cuba’s southern coast right now, below Havana, and is expected to turn north and become Tropical Storm Debby later today. The current trajectory has her making landfall north of Tampa/St. Pete, but the area will likely see significant surge and plenty of rainfall over the weekend. I’ll be watching live via my camera on the patio at the condo!

¶This countertop in our favorite donut shop always reminds me that the pandemic took things from us and, so far, has not given them back. This is the second location for this shop - Mama C’s donuts moved from its original shop probably ten years ago. The old shop had a counter that served as a meeting spot for a cast of older gentlemen that, I’m sure, solved the world’s problems on a weekly basis. It usually had a few newspapers strewn about, among plates and coffee mugs. The owner, presumably the eponymous Mama C, was always quick to refill their coffee and keep the conversation going.
¶When the shop moved to its new location, they installed the counter in this photo, presumably to ease the transition for their regulars. And it worked. I remember catching bits and pieces of their conversations in the new shop while waiting in line during weekend donut runs. The problem solvers were still at work, just tackling things from a new side of the street.
¶Then Covid hit and the doors closed. Once Mama C’s reopened, the counter was blocked off (and the floor was marked with x’s to ensure customers maintained social distance while waiting in line). Since then, most things, of course, have returned to mostly normal. But some things never have, and this counter reminds me of that every time we get donuts. It’s just a storage area now, a shell of its former role as the place where all of the world’s problems were solved, week after week.
¶Maybe someday I’ll ask if I can take a seat, have a coffee, and read my newspaper.

¶We found a bit of time for some quick work on the car tonight before dinner. One of the tail lights was out. It wasn’t a bulb issue, unfortunately. The wiring on the original fixtures is a little wonky. We got a temporary fix in place, we’ll just have to see how it holds. We also got the car up in the air for the first time, letting us take a look from below. No surprises on the frame or body, which is nice. The transmission is definitely leaking, so we’ll need to look into that. Overall, all good tough.

¶Jake and I are taking both Spitfires to a car show in Perrysburg this morning. We went to the weekly show last week but didn’t officially show the cars because we arrived a bit late (thanks, Crowd Strike!). So…technically, today is our first official car show with both Spitfires.

¶It’s becoming increasingly rare that all four of us are together, and it’s even rarer that all four of us get to sit and talk. We didn’t plan it, but one of those rare moments developed around the firepit tonight, with all of us ending a great day over s’mores.

¶Here’s my view on the way home from the car show. Two Mark III Triumph Spitfires heading down the road, one after the other. It was a short ride, ten minutes or so to grandpa’s house where we keep Jake’s car, but it was great fun. The driving was nice, of course, but following Jake in his car was the perfect way to end a great afternoon. This photo really says a lot to me.

¶Classic cars and conversation are the defining elements of a Good Car Show. After walking the lot to look at all the cars, Jake and I, along with his friend, sat alongside the Spitfires and talked about everything from social media to Smell-O-Vision. Add in the free t-shirts and this was definitely a Good Car Show. We’ll definitely try to come again next year.

¶It’s fairly dark out but not quiet — there’s a chorus of crickets and other creatures, occasionally punctuated by a plane passing overhead or a car or two going by.
