I caught this sweet moment of Jonathan and Renee glancing out the window onto Killian Court (the courtyard in front of the main building with the dome). The light was amazing!

Jonathan contemplated The Alchemist statue by Jaume Plensa a bit before we took photos in front of it. We had made the connection to Spiegel, the Plensa statue installed in front of the Toledo Museum of Art and were comparing and contrasting the two. Spiegel has two figures that are made from letters to symbolize a conversation, while The Alchemist is a solo figure made from numbers to reflect MIT’s focus on STEM.

Toledo, MIT, two, one. It’s a coincidence, of course, but it’s tempting to assign some deeper meaning to it.

Regardless, I love both of these statues.

The move out of the summer sublet went well and only took a couple hours, leaving the afternoon free. We went down to MIT and Jonathan gave us a tour of campus and the Math Department. I think he had the smile in this picture the entire time. He is so clearly excited and ready to get started. I am so happy for him and proud of him.

Some thunderstorms rolled in tonight, right as we were getting ready to leave the house to run some errands. We lost power at home. We’re running our errands now. Hopefully the power returns before we do.

I’ve been a bit frustrated with how the Spitfire’s top folded into the back seat when down – it always seems a bit cumbersome and janky. I’ve tried a few times to put the “parade boot” over the folded top but could never get it to fit right. Heck, it never even came close to fitting right. My frustration won recently, forcing me to resign to the misguided belief that the leather had shrunk over time and it just wasn’t going to fit on the car again.

Last night my faith in the Brits (surely they came up with something better than this!) had me wandering the web to figure this out.

And I did! This YouTube video explains the proper way to fold and store a Spitfire convertible top in great detail.

Turns out, there’s a trick to it.

Perhaps not surprisingly, a convertible top designed in the 1960s operates a bit differently from more contemporary tops. In a not-so-obvious twist, you need to detach the top from the upper frame, on the inside of the car, while it’s up and then pull the soft top back as the frame is folded back. This allows the bare frame to neatly and compactly drop into the back seat. With that properly stowed, the top can then be brought forward and folded over the frame.

I put my new found knowledge to work this morning before heading down to the office. It took a few minutes but was fairly easy.

And now the boot fits perfectly!

The next month or so is fairly busy for us, with trips to Boston and Florida and all sorts of stuff in between. Yesterday sort of kicked things off. Should be a fun and exciting month.

Here’s a wide shot of Jake’s room. It’s pretty nice! And there’s another upgrade over last year’s room - air conditioning!

Today is back to school day — both Jonathan and Jake are moving back to campus. We’re dropping Jonathan off at the airport for a morning flight to Boston and will drive Jake down to BG when we get back home.

Back to school efforts actually started at about 2 AM, though. Jake and I went down to the Amtrak station to pick up his friend from Greece, who is on his back to school journey, too. He spent the night and we’ll take him down to BG later this afternoon.

The house is emptying out; summer is over.

Heading out on a business trip today. A business trip! Such a rare thing in this post-COVID, everything-can-be-done-remotely world. It’s not my first since the pandemic but I’m still looking forward to it.

I just took my dad for a ride in the Spitfire. His reaction was the same as everyone else that I’ve had in the car – exhilaration. I could see it in his face…just fun, joy, and excitement. I’m really glad I got to do that with him. Now I have to get my mom out for a drive!

I didn’t sleep well last night. Not sure why. The nice thing is I can’t remember the last time I felt like I didn’t have a great night’s sleep. Hopefully it’s a one-time thing.

I taught Jonathan how to drive the Spitfire today, putting him into the small percentage of young people who can drive a manual transmission. We talked afterwards about how much more fun it is to drive than an automatic. Yep - when you know, you know!

Now both boys can drive a car with a manual stick shift. I’m considering that a point of pride as a father!

It’s time to pick my next book to read. I make this process a little too complicated, treating as if I’m facing a decision that commits me to a years-long relationship. It’s a few-weeks, tops, and should be a relatively easy decision. I’ll decide by tonight.

The drugs were allegedly blown onto the beach as Debby made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday, causing at least five deaths and widespread damage across the region before charting a path across the southeastern states.

Well, that’s a new one.

The draft, which could be subject to change, states Moore could face a show-cause penalty and possibly a suspension for allegedly deleting a thread of 52 text messages with former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions in October 2023 on the same day that media reports revealed Stalions was leading an effort to capture the playcalling signals of future opponents.

If you’re wondering how much college sports have changed over the last several years, just read this story and then look for the outrage. I’ll save you the effort - there is none. Indeed, commentators are mocking the report, saying “no one respects the NCAA” (Paul Finebaum). If true, at a minimum, Moore (attempted to) destroy evidence directly related to a matter that he knew, or should have known, would ultimately be investigated by at least his governing body…and potentially law enforcement.

Even if the media isn’t outraged, you have to wonder where the outrage is from the University of Michigan, the high and mighty institution that loved to look down its collective nose at Ohio State when Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes were investigated for tattoo gate, a tame situation by any comparison. Just a decade ago, alumni would have called for Moore’s firing as a matter of school pride and the school would have swiftly granted the request.

Not today.

I can’t wait for the season to start. Watching the Wolverines play the victim will be almost as much fun as watching the Buckeyes reestablish their dominance over that team up north.

Guardians lost a tough one tonight, in extra innings. They’ve now lost three in a row. Streaks like that make me nervous this time of year!

I’m trying to avoid negativity that creeps into my mind from silly things, like being stopped by a train. I feel like I haven’t had to wait for a train in a long time and, when caught by this one on the way home tonight, immediately felt a bit of disgust creeping in. I caught it though and then sort of marveled at the train for a bit. The graffiti was interesting to look at…pretty amazing, actually. It turned out to be a fairly long train, but I didn’t mind. Five minutes maybe? Such a dumb source of frustration…and such a welcome diversion.

Guardians lost today, in what can be described best as a pitching experiment. Offense was productive, but they clearly have some issues to sort out with starting pitchers. Today’s experiment, unfortunately, did not seem to provide any answers.

They’ll be fine, though.
