¶I’ve shot this same photo of Jake several times over the years and it just never gets old. His fascination with all things aviation fascinates me, and just makes me incredibly proud. I’m a little jealous of him and his awareness—at seventeen—of something he loves so much. Lucky kid. Keep flying Jake.

¶I thought the “ticket counter” might be able to help, so I headed upstairs as Jonathan headed to security. The agent was understanding, but could only offer a supposedly secret customer service number as help. I called on the way home and, after about a thirty minute wait, connected with the first of two agents that made the whole thing fairly painless, even telling me to take my time to make a decision. We called back in later in the evening and rebooked for tomorrow.

¶Today did not go as planned. At all.
¶Renee, Jake, and I were supposed to start our Spring Break trip to Hawaii early this morning, flying out of Detroit. Jonathan was scheduled to fly back to Boston, also heading out of Detroit at about the same time. Just yesterday afternoon I realized that this morning might be our last “early morning airport mission” with the four of us (with Jonathan away at school, aligning all of our travel schedules is only going to get tougher), and I was really looking forward to that 6AM drive to Detroit Metro.
¶Jake had a little food poisoning last night, though, and was still throwing up this morning. So, we had to adjust the mission a bit. I drove Jonathan to the airport for his flight back to Cambridge and then headed home and to start the rebooking process. Jake was feeling better by the afternoon, so we felt confident about flying tomorrow. Delta was quite helpful (and even understanding), so, after a slight delay, we’ll start our trip tomorrow.
¶Aloha.

¶I’m sitting in the waiting room at the eye doctor’s office. They’re still quite serious about masking here. Docs, employees, and all patients and visitors are required to wear them. Signs everywhere. I’m a mask proponent, but we’re clearly beyond the timeframe during which forced masking of everyone makes sense. What needs to happen for places like this to drop the requirement? COVID zero? Good luck with that.

¶Ohio Republican Senate candidates are embroiled in a “Trump off” before the upcoming primary. The commercials are disgusting and, frankly, should be embarrassing to Republican voters (do they really believe that two Senators can fire Dr. Fauci, as candidate Mike Gibbons and his out-of-state endorser Rand Paul suggest in a recent commercial?).
¶While I’m glad to see Moreno go, he won’t be missed by anyone, unless Gibbons expands to fill the resulting void in airtime. His commercials have zero substance, and essentially amount to “I love Trump, and I played football in sixth grade, so vote for me.” We may find ourselves wishing Moreno was still around.

¶What makes something a “peaceful protest”? Is it just the absence of physical violence? I don’t think so. To me, it seems like the intentional infliction of economic harm to two countries renders your protest non-peaceful.

¶Jake and I drove down to Tiffin, Ohio this morning for his track meet. We took the back roads for the hour long drive, passing through three or four tiny towns, most of which consisted of a single intersection of two lane state highways, a few run down houses, and, usually, evidence of an abandoned storefront of some sort.
¶The politics of these tiny towns is on full display. It’s not just pro-Trump (who is currently a non-candidate, ex-President) and anti-Biden. No, it’s hatefully anti-Biden. “Joe and the Ho Must Go” kind of stuff (that’s an actual, non-handwritten sign in a front yard that we passed).
¶Who does that? It’s crazy to me that people who generally claim to be religious, “family value” type people can actively promote vitriol like that. It’s not about policy, it’s about hate and intimidation.
¶It’s nuts.
¶And, I’m afraid, it’s the real Ohio right now.

¶Teddy seems to get moving in the morning at about the same pace as I do. He’s fine with getting up and at it quickly — goes from lying on his back in bed to patrolling and barking in the backyard in just a few minutes. After that burst of energy, though, he’s pretty chill for the next hour or so. Maybe he needs coffee.
