We received our government COVID tests today, nearly two years into the pandemic and probably a week or so after omicron peaked around here.

I’m thankful to have them, despite the snarkiness. I just wonder how things would have played out had we been sending these to people from the beginning, or at least closer to the beginning.

I’m also thankful because they made me think of my grandfather and his stories about “the government cheese” from back in his day. He actually liked it — apparently it made for a decent grilled cheese sandwich.

I think this past weekend was the single best weekend of football I’ve ever seen. All four NFL playoff games were incredible, each with a thrilling finish. Every game ended regulation with a field goal, three of which ended the game and the last sending it into overtime.

I wanted the Bills to win last night, and I think everyone watching (including me) was sure they would after they scored to go ahead with 13 seconds left. The Chiefs’ game-tying drive was incredible, to be sure, but the Bills’ defense played those last 13 seconds of regulation like they were already focused on the win. And overtime rules basically come down to the flip of a coin, and the Bills lost that, too.

Seeing “Replace Battery” on the screen in your Tesla produces a little anxiety, I can attest to that. This message popped up on my Model 3 yesterday. Luckily, the devil is in the details - the 12V battery needs to be replaced, not the battery battery.

A few taps in the app last night and I scheduled an appointment for first thing this morning…and now I’m sitting in the service center waiting for the tech to complete the job. Normally I’d replace a car battery myself, but the price they quoted me is ridiculously cheap…and I don’t know how to access the 12V in the 3. So, service center coffee for me this morning.

Yesterday’s NFL playoff games were fantastic - both ended on a last second field goal. The League’s system - a grueling now seventeen game regular season with playoff spots determined by wins - consistently produces a great post-season product.

Contrast that to the college football “system,” which awards “playoff” spots to teams based on arbitrary rankings, algorithms, and, I’m sure, one or more smoke-filled rooms. I haven’t researched the stats, but it sure feels like that “system” produces more lopsided, uninteresting “playoff” games than games that are actually fun to watch.

Another great NFL playoff game today, the third of the weekend to end with a last second field goal. What a great weekend of football (and we still have the Bills / Chiefs game later tonight).

I was a little torn between the Buccaneers and the Rams - I like all Tampa Bay sports teams (yes, even with the addition of Tom Brady), but it’s hard not to root for Matthew Stafford. I mean, twelve years in Detroit - someone give that man a trophy already.

I can get behind the Rams. And the Bills - we’ll see if they can win tonight.

Look at Ohio doing something fun and cool. I’m happy to see the obligatory Plowy McPlowface made the cut, but it’s not my favorite. It’s hard to beat Snowbi-Wan Kenobi.

Fox News doesn’t even try to hide its bias anymore. They actively embrace it these days. Case in point - they’re launching a new personality (I can’t remember the name, but it really doesn’t matter…it’s just the next one). In one of the promo spots for his forthcoming show, he reads a text while sitting at the news desk. It’s from his mother, who offered him this motherly advice: “sit up straight, you’re leaning to the right.”

It’s funny because it’s true. And I’m fine with that, because it feels like a jump the shark moment for the network. It’s not a news network, and everyone knows it. Even them.

But it’s also sad because it’s true. Fox isn’t a news network. It’s news-fueled entertainment. And so is CNN, and most of the others.

We really need a news network. Something that just presents good old-fashioned who, what, when, where, and why journalism. I think people want that, and I think there’s room to innovate there, too. Integrate tv delivery with social media, show the pulse of comments from the left and right as the reporters just report the facts.

I’d watch it. I’m pretty sure my mom wouldn’t, though.

I didn’t know radio frequency (RF) harvesting was a thing. Using otherwise wasted energy from radio waves to recharge batteries seems sort of genius, even if it is “best suited [for] low-power devices such as TV remotes.” There’s a few of those on the planet (hell, we probably have a dozen lying around), so it’s not hard to see the potential impact of this tech.

“Like working on a jammed desk drawer, the ground crew could push or pull harder on devices to try to unstick them. Or imagine gently shaking that drawer to loosen the clutter lodged in it. The crew could also initiate a low-level vibration — a “shimmy” — by firing its rockets in different sequences.”

So the ground crew can built in the “push harder” and “shimmy and shake” options, but what if it needs a good, swift kick to get things moving?

I did some maintenance on Daystream user RSS feeds tonight. Fixed a few minor issues that broke feed validation from time to time (depending on the items in the feed at any given time.)

Digging into RSS is always a source of frustration for me. It’s beautiful and, yes, simple. It’s amazing to me that more people don’t use it to consume content from the web. I get why publishers moved away from it - eyeballs on sites are more valuable than quickly scannable content in a reader.

They won, we lost.

I watched ‘All Madden’ last night. I like biopics, particularly when they reveal something that I didn’t know about the person beforehand. This one didn’t reveal much about Madden I didn’t already know (I even remember reading about his panic attack on a flight from Tampa that was the reason he travelled by train…and then, famously, by bus). But I still loved it. Nostalgia works. Including the old commercials was a nice touch.

“Even if no one else reads my blog, having an idea harvester and an archive of years of writing gives me something no one has had before. No one.”

Except Daystream.

I understand Dave Winer’s excitement about his Daytona (and now Drummer) project, but to claim “no one” had something like his new feature simply because he’s not aware of it is sort of naive and, well, arrogant. It’s like every inventor that comes to me for a patent application, claiming their invention must be new because they’ve never seen anything like it in stores before. Nine times out of ten a simple patentability search reveals something really close to what they’ve got. Did Dave make a search before writing that claim? Or is he just making a judgment based on the various blogging and writing platforms he has used or is familiar with?

I mean, damn, one of the main reasons we started Daystream was because of the frustration we had when looking for content on someone’s wall.

I’ve tried to engage with Dave over the years, but he’s never responded to any of my efforts. I’m not in the club, I understand that…and I’m ok with it.

I experimented with his Fargo product a few years back, and swore I’d never use anything of his again after that experience—trying to follow his projects was like trying to untangle a bowl of spaghetti before eating any of it. And then he killed it.

So, yeah, his current Daytona and Drummer projects look interesting, but I’m blissfully happy with the “idea harvester and an archive of years of writing” that Daystream has given me for over a decade. And I don’t care for spaghetti much.
