¶Visiting a favorite of mine for dinner tonight—Ted Peters, which is famous for its smoked fish. Renee has never been a fan but was willing to go. She got a hamburger, but tried my smoked salmon. She actually liked it, and vowed to order the smoked Mahi next time we go. And she loved the German potato salad.

¶The Mexican restaurant at the end of the street — Agave — has become one of our favorites over the last several years, but you have to go early because it always gets crowded. Renee and I were ready for an early dinner tonight after rolling into town early this morning, so it seemed like a logical choice.
¶Salsa, tacos, and beer. And a bit of ice cream for dessert. Perfect dinner.

¶My sister Janet and her husband Ray were the last people to stay in our condo since we weren’t able to take our usual trip over winter break. They left this picture on our refrigerator, which was the perfect thing to find at 2AM after a long day of driving!

¶One benefit of making “the drive” to St. Pete Beach in my car instead of Renee’s—nicer bathrooms. Grocery stores instead of gas stations. A nice perk, for sure.

¶Teddy has been great in the car again. He’s quiet, but a little nervous this time, I think. He loves the walks when we stop to charge, and happily gets back in the car when we’re ready to go. I don’t think he fully relaxes in the car, but seems to do ok.
¶Here Renee is giving him a drink while we charge in Acworth, Georgia.

¶Tesla SuperChargers are generally located in grocery store or shopping center parking lots. There’s usually a small patch of grass nearby, which Teddy appreciates.

¶We made it from Perrysburg to Florence, Kentucky for the first segment of the drive—much better than I thought. The car automatically started preconditioning the battery for fast charging when we were about 20 miles away. We charged to about 90% in a little over 20 minutes, for a little under $20. Incredible.

¶We’re driving the Tesla to Florida for the first time today. We’ve continued to drive Renee’s gas car for our drives to St. Pete even after getting the Tesla three years ago. But, with current gas prices, we have a bit more motivation to go electric on this trip.
¶So, we headed out on our first real cross country trip in the Tesla this morning at about 4:30.

¶Grabbing a quick charge while waiting for Jake’s shift to end. The last few days have brought record high temperatures, but this evening is really pleasant—82 degrees out according to my car, with no humidity to speak of and a slight breeze. The train passing by probably helps, as does Zeppelin on the radio.

¶No breakfast by the pool this morning. Jake has an early meeting with his flight instructor to go over a few final things before he takes the written test for his private private license. He worked late last night, and is still a little sleepy, so he asked me to drive him to the airport.
¶Yes, of course I will.
¶My role as a dad is changing. At 20 and 17, the boys are independent, for the most part, and don’t need me for most of the things I’ve generally helped them with over the years.
¶I’ve really noticed this over the last several months. I’m not going to lie—it kind of sucks.
¶It doesn’t bother me, though. It just sort of hits me in the moment when they’re doing something on their own that used to require my help. I’m proud of both of them and their growing independence, of course. Pride is why this change in my role doesn’t bother me. It also helps me appreciate it when they do ask for my help.
¶Jonathan asked me to tie his tie a few weeks back when we were in Boston for my niece’s wedding. I loved that.
¶And now Jake wants me to drive him to the airport for a meeting with his flight instructor.
¶And I love that.

¶One of the things I struggle with on Daystream is the difference between a post and an article. The main distinction is that an article has a title and a post doesn’t. It’s somewhat more extensive than that (different editors, articles have a special isolated view, etc.), but, conceptually, not much more.
¶Inclusion of both types of entries has been intentional from the beginning, but, to this day, I struggle with choosing the best bucket for a particular entry at the time of writing it. I make a choice in the moment and the content sits in that bucket forevermore. This in-the-moment decision is largely based on the expected length I have for a particular piece of content when I start writing it. Pretty short? Make it a post. Longer? Make it an article.
¶I suppose that framework works ok, but it certainly breaks down from time to time. For example, this morning I was looking back on this post on the ways in which travel has changed in recent years. It might be one of my favorite things I’ve written on Daystream. But, reading it today, I couldn’t help but think that it should have been an article. It’s somewhat long and certainly lends itself to a title.
¶At a minimum, I need to add functionality for switching a post to an article. I added that to the todo list right after re-reading that post this morning.
¶This, by the way, is a post and should remain one. I think.

¶This is, indeed, encouraging, but he has likely had zero confidence on the issue over the last several years (decades?), so “more confident than ever” could still mean “not very confident at all.”
