¶We went to Game 2 of the ECHL Kelly Cup finals last night. The Walleye continued to struggle, spanning four periods between goals (going back to Game 1). The team is struggling all around - passing is less crisp and guys are just not in the positions they should be, leading to missed opportunities and turnovers. The first two games of this series are not representative of Toledo hockey, but, unfortunately, we’ve got to live with it. Hopefully they can start a rally in Game 3…on the road.

¶Wow it’s cold this morning—dropped to 52° overnight. Looks like it’s going to stay cool today, too, only reaching the mid seventies for a high. Good day to finish moving that mountain of mulch.

¶I had another episode of random radio this morning—where I wake up with some (seemingly) random song in my head and no recollection of what triggered it. I always assume the song is a remnant of a dream, but realize it may be something I heard in the background the night before, like in a commercial on tv or something.
¶Anyways, today’s random radio song is Only Wanna be with You by Hootie & The Blowfish. I can’t remember the last time I heard that song, and now, this morning, I can’t stop singing it in my head.

¶I recently upgraded the Daystream web app to Ruby on Rails 7. Everything went rather smoothly, but I did discover a hidden issue a few days ago. Basically, images in articles weren’t being rendered.
¶It took me a couple days, but I finally tracked the issue down to a change in the default variant processor in Rails’ Active Storage Module. Turns out, Amazon’s Linux doesn’t seem to be configured with the new default processor (vips), so the servers couldn’t render the images whenever a relevant article was requested.
¶Fixing the problem was straightforward - a simple settings change to use the default processor from Rails 6 (mini_magick) instead of the new default (I decided this was easier than installing vips on the AWS servers).
¶So, articles are now being rendered in their full glory again, letting me reflect on some of my favorites, like The Hustler is not a Pool Movie.

¶This touches on everything I hate about Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and all the other traditional social networks. Someone takes the time to make a thoughtful post, and it “devolve[s] into bullshit.”

¶I’m not a huge NBA fan, but I have been watching the playoffs with some heightened interest this year. I’m not sure why. The Finals should be fun to watch—something nice about seeing the Celtics back in it. I’m rooting for them.

¶What did we do over this Memorial Day weekend? Well, I spent most of my time making a mole hill of out of a mountain of mulch. I’m guessing I’ve got two cubic yards or so left to go, out of the twelve we had delivered.
¶I thought I could finish it over the long weekend. Nope. Missed it by that much.

¶Looking at the label on the back, I believe that’s my first copy of Dune (I’ve had several over the years). I bought it at my all time favorite bookstore — Thackeray’s in Toledo — probably around 30 years ago.
¶Thackeray’s is long gone and I miss it dearly. I used to love going there with my dad, and spent many a Sunday afternoon there later in life all by myself, perusing, reading, and buying books.
¶That book is worth way more than a quarter!

¶My mother-in-law is having a garage sale. I walked through the setup in the garage the other night (as I was breaking my vow to never ‘leave’ a game early). Two of my books somehow found their way into the wares. Two of my all time favorites no less — Dune and Shōgun.
¶Not sure how that happened (Renee denies giving them to her, and is telling me I must have done it — no way!).
¶Anyways, I pulled them both. Not for sale!

¶I loved the new Top Gun movie, by the way. The connection to the original is solid and not contrived, and the overt throwbacks don’t get in the way of the new story. It’s really well done. I wouldn’t hesitate one bit to go see it again.

¶I broke a long-standing vow of mine yesterday.
¶Well, kind of.
¶Long ago, as a freshman at Ohio State, I left a football game in the fourth quarter as my beloved Buckeyes trailed LSU by 13 points. The game looked hopeless to me and my mates, so we decided to pack it in and head home early. When I eventually made it to my dorm room, I noticed my roommate glued to the tiny television in our common room. He glanced at me and my friends and gave us a simple “you’re not going to believe this.” We knew right away that the Buckeyes had somehow made a game of it, and then sat and watched—on television—the last few seconds of what is considered one of the greatest games ever played in Ohio Stadium.
¶I missed it. And I vowed right then and there to never again leave a game early.
¶And I haven’t. Whenever we go to a sporting event, we stay to the end, no matter what. Usually we even stay a bit longer, especially for hockey games—you’ve got to see the three stars, after all.
¶Well, I broke that vow last night. Sort of.
¶Our beloved Toledo Walleye are playing in the ECHL Western Conference Finals. I watched the first period at Renee’s parents’ house, and it was awful. It’s probably the worst twenty minutes of hockey I’ve ever seen a Walleye team play. They were down 0-4 at the end of the first, and I packed it in. Hopeless, I said, and left.
¶I couldn’t watch the game at home (it’s minor league hockey…streaming is a bit of a challenge), but checked the score later as I was headed to bed (they’re playing in Utah, so the game was on relatively late). 2-4 half way through the third period.
¶Interesting.
¶I checked again with five minutes to go.
¶Tied.
¶Again.
¶Overtime.
¶Again.
¶Still tied.
¶Again.
¶Walleye win 5-4, about five minutes into the overtime period.
¶Damn! Probably one of the greatest comebacks in Toledo hockey history, in a playoff game no less, and I missed it!
¶But, technically, I wasn’t at the game, so I didn’t break my vow to never again leave a game early.
¶Right?
¶Anyways, the Walleye play again tonight and could win the series on the road. I’ll be at Renee’s parents’ house again, and there’s no way I’m leaving early.
¶No matter what.

¶I’m mad at myself. I’ve neglected posting lately, mostly because I was doing some work on the back end of Daystream (moving it to the most recent AWS Ruby platform, upgrading Rails, etc.). That’s probably the biggest downside of the solo setup—working on Daystream takes away from the time I have to use it, especially when it’s not my day job, so to speak.
¶But, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
¶The shame is that we’ve done a lot over the last couple weeks—moved Jonathan, Paige’s wedding, a friend’s wedding—and I haven’t posted about any of it.
¶Maybe I’ll make some posts to the past.

¶Turns out we had the perfect amount of space in the car to move Jonathan out of his sophomore dorm room. Everything—less a few guitars and other small things he’s storing in his girlfriend’s room—fit in one car load. So now we’re off to Paige’s wedding, rolling into the hotel Clampett style.

¶Made it to Batavia for the night.
¶The Maps app threw us for a bit of a loop, directing us to the U.S. Border and Immigration Control facility based on the address for the hotel. The barbed wire fencing and lack of a Holiday Inn Express sign were decent indicators that something was awry.
¶We looped around the road a bit and eventually found it. Must be a new hotel, or they’ve reconfigured addresses on the road recently.

¶This weekend should be quite an adventure. Renee and I are headed to Cambridge to move Jonathan out of his sophomore dorm room and into a temporary dorm he’s able to use for a few weeks in exchange for helping with the graduation ceremony. And our niece is getting married in Western Massachusetts on Saturday. So, we’re loading Jonathan up tomorrow, headed out to the wedding location, heading back to Cambridge on Sunday to unload him, and then heading home on Monday.
