Stream

Sounds of the Big Melt

Today’s warm weather got the big melt underway - the sewer was swallowing melted snow all day long. I recorded this near the sewer across the street from the house…just a quick clip of the steady stream of water flowing across the grate and into the space below.

The narrative on Bitcoin is shifting. I’ve seen several articles on the energy impact of Bitcoin mining over the last couple weeks. I’d seen nothing on it before then, although my son had mentioned it to me several times.

This morning’s random radio song in my head - Crystal Ball by Styx. Haven’t heard it in a long time, yet it was in my head when I woke up this morning.

My grandparents had some habits that always identified them as children of the depression. Rinsing and reusing plastic baggies and aluminum foil, etc. I wonder if someday you’ll be able to identify people that lived through the current pandemic by certain behaviors. Will some people still wear masks regularly? Twenty years from now? Thirty?

I think people are ready to move on and will be more than willing to ditch the masks and social distancing as soon as possible. I do know a few people that are pledging to change behaviors forever, though. We’ll see. It could end up being like driving habits after getting a speeding ticket. You slow down for a few weeks but eventually temporary changes yield to old habits.

Waiting for carry out tonight I realized one of our favorite restaurants - in downtown Perrysburg, OHIO - was/is a proud 2013 supporter of the Colorado Law Enforcement Officers Association. 🤷‍♂️

Amazon built two new facilities in the Toledo area in the last year. The fulfillment center in Rossford is already online but the smaller delivery station in Toledo - pictured here - seems a bit stuck. Construction wrapped up a couple months ago and it has sat empty since then. I drive past it twice each day and rarely see more than two or three vehicles in the lot. I imagine there’s quite a bit involved in bringing one of these into the fold of the delivery network, but it sort of feels like it should be operational by now.

This is a wonderful story on the basic research and the scientist behind the key enzyme that enables PCR. We need more stories like this in the popular media. People need to understand and appreciate the importance of basic research.

There’s a rattle in the steering column of my Model 3. It’s probably two-and-a-half years old, so it seems like it’s about the right time for the typical, minor annoyances to develop. It was sporadic when I first noticed it, but now it’s constant - a steady hum when driving at a constant speed, and an increasingly louder grinding as regenerative braking kicks in. I’m fairly sure the housing is loose and a quick tightening (or carefully placed wad of paper towel) will fix it. Weekend project!

It’s amazing. We buy cars based on performance and bells and whistles. And, over time, we’re usually happy with all those things. Eventually, though, frustration with the entire car grows because of cheap plastic parts that have nothing to do with performance, bells, or whistles.

Is any puppy not a “morning puppy?” It’s crazy - we wake up at about 6-6:30 every morning. Within five minutes of getting up, Teddy is ready to play fetch. Every day.

One positive thing I started during the pandemic - donating blood. It’s easy to do and the Red Cross makes it fairly convenient (at least where I’m at). One thing I really like is the text message I get a few weeks later telling me my donation arrived at a hospital to help someone. What a powerful way to reconnect with donors…and to encourage them to make another donation.

I’m fascinated by The Curse of Oak Island. I love the team’s dogged pursuit of treasure and their respect for history, so much so that I’m willing to ignore the constant stream of hyperbole (“A possibly gold object? Could it be?”)

They’re either going to rewrite some history or create the world’s largest sump while trying. I’ll watch either way.

I went to Home Depot today and it was glorious. I hadn’t been inside the store for probably ten months. Weird experience, but it felt great just to walk around inside and interacting with workers (thanks for the help!).

So-called “smart TVs” are smart because they know how to chew on your data. They’re not free, yet, but you’ve got to wonder if we’ll get there someday. Sadly, I think plenty of people would take that deal.
