¶We timed our visit to the merch truck perfectly. We arrived at about 11:45 and it opened at noon. Met a nice couple from Minneapolis while we waited, and spent some time figuring out which shirts to buy. Renee consulted her sister by FaceTime (my opinion is largely irrelevant on such matters, and I’m ok with that).
¶Now we don’t have to scramble to buy shirts tonight!
¶Off to lunch.

¶We had breakfast and did some planning at Starbucks. We ended up walking to the Guardians team store. Beautiful morning for a walk. The team store was a little underwhelming. I didn’t feel like paying hundreds of dollars for a jersey, and couldn’t find a decent hoodie. I’ll wait for Stones merch. Renee got a hat.

¶Jake would love this view…we’ve got front row seats for the approach to Burke Lakefront Airport. I’m betting we’ll see some private jets arriving tomorrow. I saw a few smaller planes tonight, including this Cessna, as the sun set over the stadium and airport. I’ve got a great view, but I’m betting the pilot’s is better!

¶Renee and I are in Cleveland for the weekend. We’re going to The Rolling Stones concert tomorrow night, and figured we’d make a whole weekend of it. We had a great dinner at a local steakhouse tonight, enjoying a couple things off the special Stones-themed menu (Renee got the Start Me Up drink and I had the Groupie Grouper entree; both were great).

¶I didn’t realize it until I posted the photo about the blind clips, but Denny also gave us this compost bin yesterday, which he pulled from his neighbors garbage. He talked to her about it…she was discarding two of them for some reason. She never used them! So he took one and gave one to us. Another great find.

¶I’m not ashamed to admit I did a little garbage picking on our walk this morning. I noticed the neighbor was trashing this set of vertical blinds and I couldn’t resist taking a closer look. Not that I want vertical blinds. We already have multiple sets at the condo. The problem is this tiny little clip that holds each blind to the carriage that slides along the track. The clips tend to break, particularly after decades of sun exposure. This set appeared to have the same clip, so I tried to pull a few to take to Florida. No luck…they absolutely wouldn’t come out of the carriage. No worries, though, I just cut the lines and pulled several carriages out. I don’t know if I’ll be able to somehow use the clip independent of these carriages, or if I’ll need to replace entire carriages to fix broken clips, but at least I can try. We’ll see.

¶Our findings reveal a significant reduction in PD occurrence following anti-tetanus vaccination, with a time-dependent association between the elapsed time since vaccination and both the rate and progression of PD. These results are supported by evidence that antimicrobial treatments significantly alter disease severity, suggesting the actual involvement of Clostridium Tetani in PD pathology.
¶This is only a preprint, but it’s really interesting and definitely something to keep an eye on.
¶After reading it, I wondered if men get tetanus more than women, considering our penchant for playing and working in the dirt and handling rusty metal. Turns out we do (although relative prevalances may flip at age 60). Then I wondered if Parkinson’s is more prevalent in men than in women. It is.

¶I had a nice reminder today that we often fail to appreciate the things in our lives that have become common or routine. I had a video conference with an inventor early this morning. As we got underway, he asked “Is that the actual view from your office?”. He said he assumed it was real because he saw cars driving over the bridge. I told him it was real and gave him a bit of a tour (he’s not from around here), pointing to the Maumee River and the Martin Luther King bridge. I even told him about the ships that come and go and how fun it is to watch the bridge raise and lower as they head into Toledo.
¶It’s a great view and I love it, but his question made me realize that I might be taking it for granted lately, maybe even forgetting about it. Not good. I need to appreciate it more.

¶The OLED screen on my new iPad can show black as so black that I can’t see the links in some apps…they need to rethink their color schemes. This screen is impressive!

¶Again, everyone already understands the annual hot dog eating competition is just an advertisement for Nathan’s....
¶Never, ever forget that Major League Eating was founded on the heels of a successful PR campaign to increase the exposure of the Nathan’s contest. And the Shea brothers, the founders of Major League Eating, “started their own (PR) firm…and…took the Nathan’s account with them.” Oh, and George Shea’s wife “is a writer for WWE and a former soap opera producer.”
¶These folks are masters of promotion and publicity.
¶Chestnut will be back, likely on the eve of the contest. You can almost feel it.
¶What’s the angle, though? Just more attention for Nathan’s, in the few weeks before the contest on the Fourth of July?
¶Maybe the Shea brothers are working to promote Impossible Foods, which makes the vegan dog they currently, apparently, view as a conflict of interest. Maybe they resolve the “conflict” in a couple weeks with some manufactured resolution that vegan dogs don’t compete with actual hot dogs, that the two can, in fact, co-exist. I can see the commercials now.
¶Maybe? Maybe.
¶Whatever the angle, it’s PR gold for everyone involved – Nathan’s, the contest, Impossible Foods, and, lest we forget, Joey Chestnut.

¶It looks like there’s something here for everyone. The movie should please adults who grew up on the show. Side Quests is for kids, like the original Adventure Time was at first, and Heyo BMO is for preschool-aged children.
¶They forgot to list parents of adults who grew up on the show. Renee and I are in that category – Jake always loved Adventure Time. I’d definitely go see the movie.

¶I’ve long thought that the map is Snapchat’s killer feature. I’ve used it for years to get “man on the street” video and commentary during hurricane season. During active storms, while we’re watching St. Pete Beach from afar, I find it more informative and authentic than the various news and weather outlets. The combination of the Snap Map and any of dozens of decent weather apps turn my phone into a decent storm tracking station.
¶I haven’t had to use the Map for hurricane tracking yet this year (here’s hoping I don’t have to very much this year!), but I did discover a new use for it tonight. During the Guardians game, a crazy fan ran onto the field and was chased and tackled by the police. The television broadcast did what they always do in these circumstances - refuse to show video of the fan. I get that they don’t want to encourage copycats by giving trespassers a stage, but, darn it, I want to see video of that! Was it a streaker? A protestor? We never know, because they won’t show them.
¶Enter the Snap Map! I checked it about an hour after the “incident” in tonight’s game and, sure enough, The Map gave me sever clips of the fan posted by people who were actually at the game. Sure the video was low quality and shaky, but that’s all I needed. Curiosity satisfied.
¶Btw, he wasn’t a streaker, but did add some flourish to the bit by doing a backflip before getting tased.

¶We’re one step closer to getting the new Spitfire – booked the transport order today. It could take up to five weeks to arrive, so now we wait.

¶I love RSS, but I’ve never seen a single non-geek use it. I remember trying, on several occasions, to try to get my wife to use it, years ago. I tried to show her the efficiency of using an RSS reader. She really had no interest though, because, for her, the browser is just easier. Slower and less efficient, but easier. It’s hard to get past that and I think that’s why it’s become the ham radio of the internet - a great technology that is beloved by a small population of enthusiasts, but ignored by the wider population of users.
¶I still love it, still use it to read the web, and have incorporated it into Daystream from the beginning. I have some ideas for additional RSS-based features, too.

We also know that doomscrolling on social media can have negative effects, including less and poorer quality sleep. Getting too engrossed in anything on your phone makes it all too easy to stay up later than you should.
¶I stopped reading email and scanning social feeds at night years ago. Lately, I try to create content at night rather than consume it. I swear I sleep better lately, too. The more consistent exercise routine I’ve adopted this year could contribute to this, too.

¶The gorillas are always a favorite of ours. The way they interact with each other is always fascinating, and I always try to watch them watch us. What are they thinking? This silverback kept a close eye on everybody, both on the inside and the outside. He watched this kid particularly closely, but never flinched or even reacted. Calm, cool, collected, and always vigilant.

¶Kirkja went back to mom every few minutes and “checked in,” always bumping mom’s leg with her head seemingly to let her know she’s there. Kirkja is absolutely adorable and watching the two of them interact was fascinating.

¶Here I caught Kirkja on one of her jaunts away from mom. She always ran, never walked. Really it’s sort of a fumbling prance…light on her feet but still a bit clumsy. She’s clearly still getting used to the trunk, too, letting flop every which way as she moved about and tumbled over herself.

¶Kirkja ventured away from mom quite a bit, actually, but always seemed to head back to her side after exploring for a few minutes. Mom didn’t appear to be too nervous about it, either.
