¶We also got to see this 1941 Stearman Army Biplane take off. It’s slow, but very cool. This one is used for aerial tours of St. Pete, which can apparenty include an acrobatics option.

¶Jake’s dream plane is the Bonanza. It would be my choice, too…if I was a pilot and if I was in the market for a plane! We watched this one on the ramp right below our table all the way through takeoff. He gave a nice wing wave on the way out, too. Beautiful plane.

¶Jake’s leaving for home tomorrow, so, of course, we had to have breakfast at Albert Whitted airport in St. Pete this morning! It was a beautiful day for it, too. Perfect weather, and the airport had decent activity for us to watch. Great morning.

¶Teddy was up early this morning, so we left on our walk a little earlier than usual. We saw the sunrise, which was nice. Now we’re back and enjoying a coffee on the patio before heading out for breakfast. Teddy is vigilantly watching everything and everybody.

¶This post-game interview with Paul Maurice is everything I love about sports. When the competition is over, it’s about pure emotion, and he’s not afraid to show it.
¶It’s not what I thought it would be but it’s so much better. But it’s the hugs, man.”
¶For me, Maurice is in the same category of coaches as Dan Campbell of the Lions in the NFL. His press conferences are pure gold, from a fan’s point of view, and I bet he’s a hell of a motivator in the locker room. Much like the Lions players for Campbell, I bet Panthers players would run (skate) through a brick wall for the guy.
¶[I]t’s the hugs, man.
¶I absolutely love that quote, and the fact that he said it in the moments after winning the Stanley Cup. It applies to so much more than hockey. We had a family wedding on the night of Game 7. Indeed, several of us watched bits of the game on my phone during the reception. At the end of the evening, after eating and dancing for hours, and right before we headed out in our separate directions, it was all about the hugs, and it was great.

¶That’s now one of my all time favorite sports quotes. Thank you, coach.

¶I got some good news on the Spitfire this evening - the transport company is picking it up from the seller tomorrow. Hopefully that means they’ll be scheduling a delivery date soon. It’s possible they’ll deliver it while we’re on vacation.

¶It’s always sad, infuriating, and even a little comical when we reach southern Georgia. The interstate is lined with billboards warning of Armageddon, praising jesus, and villainizing democrats (“Don’t be a Democrat, they’re destroying America!”). Give me a break. “Abortion is Murder” seems to be a favorite, too.
¶Someone is spending a whole bunch of money to infuriate folks. Or, more likely, to manipulate them.
¶The contrast between the outright nasty tone of these billboards and the welcoming tone of the many signs for sausage shops and boiled peanuts stands is really strange. I’ve driven through the area my entire life, but I’ve never spent any time here, other than the occasional overnight stay in Valdosta. It seems nice, until you get bombarded with those damn signs. I don’t think I’ll ever spend any time here, they clearly don’t want me.

¶One thing I love about our drives to Florida, and the early departure time they bring, is watching the sunrise as we head south on I-75. We usually get a nice view of things around Dayton and Cincinnati. This morning, we still had some remnants of a beautiful sunrise at our first charging stop in Florence, Kentucky.

¶We had the web and it was glorious. Anyone with some basic technical skills, or the desire to learn them, could buy a domain and start publishing content on that domain in a matter of hours, if not minutes. But they took it from us. Not in the traditional sense, mind you, because technically we still have it. We can still publish content at will. No, their taking is little more devious. They built their silos and made it even easier for people to publish content…in the silos. And they let people do this for no money (not for free, mind you). And then they junkified all the great content with ads and algorithms and infinite scrolling and piss-poor organization that makes it damn near impossible to find your old content and that of others.
¶But, we still had the web, and I loved it. I used TypePad, Movable Type, Wordpress, and even Drupal. I rolled my own site and publishing system more than a couple times. I’ve bought more domains than I care to admit. I’ve written about everything from breakfast musings to pending patent legislation.
¶I built Daystream to bring the glory back. It’s a publishing system without the crap. No ads or algorithms, no infinite scroll, and logical content organization. It’s the web as I fell in love with it, and my goal is to help other people discover the glory of what we used to have. And if we get enough people to realize that we still have it, well, maybe it will actually move the needle a bit.
¶We still have the web, and it is glorious. We just don’t realize that we still have it, or that it’s glorious.

¶Update on the new Spitfire - title is on its way, but the car still sits in Wisconsin. We’re waiting for the transport company to schedule a pickup. It’s looking like we won’t see it until mid July.

¶Overall, the NHL playoffs have been great this year. The finals have been a bit lackluster, with Florida dominating, but Edmonton won Game 4 and is out to an early lead in Game 5. Florida has zero pressure to win tonight – they’re at home with a 3 games to 1 lead. Win tonight, and they get the Cup in front on their own fans. If they lose tonight, a bit of pressure will creep in.
¶I’m pulling for Florida but I’d also like to see a Finals that reflects the fantastic nature of the playoffs up to this point. It’s not likely, but I’d love to see Edmonton stretch this to six or seven games.
¶I don’t want hockey to end yet.

¶I’d like to be known as somebody who was just a decent human being.
¶Stephen King is a treasure that, I think, we don’t fully appreciate. I love his writing, but I get that not everyone does. Beyond the books, though, he genuinely seems like a wonderful person. This brief article (it’s not an interview, or not presented as one anyways) gives real insight into that, I think.
¶He’ll of course be remembered as “the scary guy,” but I think he’s got the “decent human being” thing down, too.

¶IBM has given us confidence that a voice ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of our restaurant’s future.
¶To be clear, McDonald’s isn’t walking away from “voice ordering” technology altogether. It looks like they’re walking away from IBM with enough confidence to make a final decision on fully implementing it by the end of the year. Does someone have a better solution than the IBM system? Is McDonald’s going to roll its own?
¶Who knows, but it seems like AI will be handling fast food ordering in the not too distant future. This could actually be a great “real people” test for AI – we all know what it’s like to have a drive-through order get messed up, for whatever reason. It’s frustrating, and having the restaurant fix the mistake is usually not worth the time and effort of driving back. Will AI improve order accuracy? If it does, “real people” will notice and AI will earn a victory in the public eye. Real people will also notice if it doesn’t, or if it makes things worse. Either of those situations would be a major loss for AI.
¶Do you want fries with that?

¶So there’s a statute of Oliver Hazard Perry in a park across the way from Cleveland Browns Stadium. It reminded me, of course, of the statue of Perry at home, so I did a little research. Turns out, the Perrysburg Perry statue is a bronze casting of an original Cleveland Perry statue. This one, near the stadium in Cleveland, is itself a bronze casting of the original.
¶Ours is a hand-me-down!

¶The Stones certainly did not disappoint. They played a full 2+ hour set, marching through a set list that’s nearly impossible to complain about (no Can’t you hear me knockin’) and at a pace that would have exhausted bands thirty years younger. A great show all around. I’ll reflect on it in coming days.
