¶I used Google to search for some help with Ulysses actions in the iOS Shortcuts app. I wanted to add a “move sheet” action to my existing Daystream shortcuts, basically to move a sheet to an archive group after a shortcut publishes the sheet to Daystream.
¶I searched for “ulysses app shortcut action move sheet to another collection” and got a decent list of search results back. Google offered the following “AI Summary” at the top of those results:
¶To create a shortcut action in the Ulysses app to move a sheet to another collection, you would use the “Move Sheet” action, selecting the desired sheet and then choosing the target collection from the list of available options within the shortcut editor.
¶Wow. No need to wade through the search results. This is exactly the information I needed. AI for the win, right?
¶Well, as Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend!”
¶Ulysses does not provide a “Move Sheet” action to the Shortcuts app. In fact, the lack of such a sheet is the reason I went to Google in the first place. It’s the obvious solution to the problem I’m trying to address; my first thought was to look for exactly that action within the Shortcuts app. It’s not there and, to my knowledge, has never been a part of the Shortcuts package provided by Ulysses.
¶So I did some more poking around and found some documentation on the Ulysses x-callback-URL scheme, which does include a move action. I constructed the URL I needed and added an Open X-Callback-URL action to my shortcut and, viola! Works perfectly.
¶So, AI for the win? No, to the contrary, this is a total fail. It appears to have hallucinated into existence a Shortcut action that just isn’t there. And, as if that’s bad enough, it completely missed the actual solution that clearly does exist and is available on the web. Granted, my search as focused on Shortcut actions, but, AI is supposed to be smart, right? I’d think it might expand the scope of my query when it’s clear the requested action doesn’t exist.
¶I guess it’s just easier to hallucinate.

¶Yep, my Ulysses to Daystream shortcuts work perfectly, right out of the box. I’ve got some ideas for improvement, though, so I’m working on those now.

¶We’ve decided to put the Spitfires in storage for the winter. I originally planned to just park my car on the driveway, but that got old as soon as the colder temperatures arrived last week. We drove mine over there today and will take Jake’s tomorrow. Winter is coming.

Penguin Random House underscores copyright protection in AI rebuff (thebookseller.com)
¶This is great to see, but I’m not sure it does much to prevent AI companies from training on newly published books. I can’t imagine they’re scanning printed books for or buying ebooks to plug into model training. Maybe they’re scraping copies available on rogue sites, which would already be a copyright infringement.
¶It certainly feels good, though.
¶The new wording states: “No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any manner for the purpose of training artificial intelligence technologies or systems”, and will be included in all new titles and any backlist titles that are reprinted.

¶NASA made some significant advancements in the search for extraterrestrial life this week. First, SpaceX launched NASA’s Europa Clipper, which will eventually make about 50 flybys of Europa, the moon of Jupiter that scientists believe has ice-covered oceans that are twice the volume of Earth’s. Second, NASA scientists published a paper in Nature describing computer modeling that predicts the presence of “radiatively habitable zones within exposed mid-latitude ice on Mars.” If there’s water in those ‘radiatively habitable zones’, “mid-latitude ice exposures could represent the most easily accessible locations to search for extant life on Mars.”
¶I’m 54. I’m beginning to think it’s entirely possible, that in my lifetime, we’ll have evidence of extraterrestrial microbial life.
¶What a time to be alive.

¶The Guardians and Yankees played another great game in the ALCS last night. Cleveland fell short this time, though, which naturally puts the game a notch below Thursday’s game on the instant classic meter. Tonight is now an elimination game and things are looking bleak. But, Guardians baseball is all about never giving up. Let’s go.

¶This scene really captures the beauty of the entire evening. Jake is waiting to turn onto the runway for takeoff while a beautiful crescent moon hangs above the airport and flight center. What a perfect evening.

¶Jake had a flight slot in the evening, so Renee and I headed down to watch. The sky was amazing, switching between yellow, orange, and purple as the sun set. I worked on getting my shutter speed right, trying not to freeze the props in shots of the plane. It’s tricky, particularly when the light is changing with every shot. I snapped about 600 photos over the course of an hour. About 100 of those were usable. I liked maybe five of them, with this one being my favorite. Props look good, motion is evident while the plane is in focus, and there’s a clear shot of can Jake looking ahead as they takeoff. Love it.

¶We found a nice little cafe for dinner tonight — The Hurricane Cafe. I love their logo. Palm trees in high winds (including hurricanes) fascinate me. They normally appear so delicate, a single upright trunk with a bulb of leaves at the top. An odd structure for a tree, really. But watch a palm tree in a windy storm and you’ll appreciate the genius of this simplicity. The fronds fold back and the trunk flexes and bends but rarely seems to break. It’s quite amazing.
¶The image of a palm tree in a hurricane has become somewhat of a symbol of the power of life to me. Hurricanes are probably one of the most powerful destructive forces we have on earth. Palm trees almost seem to enjoy the challenge.
¶They don’t always win, of course, but their simple design is quite effective at giving them a fighting chance.
¶Food was good, too. Renee had a salad and I had sweet potato encrusted grouper. And key lime pie.

¶I only took one lens on our turtle adventure, and probably picked the wrong one (I had the 70-200 and wish I had the 28-70). I was glad I had the longer lens, though, when I caught this shot of Renee as she took a call from Jake. He was heading to a haircut appointment and just wanted to catch up a bit with mom.

¶We had a chance to watch as they fed this turtle (I forget her name!). Initially, she wasn’t too interested in eating, intentionally moving away from the tongs with the squid every time the worker positioned it in front of her. This changed quickly once the worker placed it under her nose, though. The turtle perked up at that point, and had a few squid for dinner.

¶Renee and I made the brief drive up the coast to visit the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. They had a handful of loggerhead sea turtles in hospital tanks recovering from various treatments, including shell treatments and flipper amputations. Seeing the turtles up close was truly amazing, and talking with the dedicated staff, whom I assume are volunteers, was inspiring. They were all very helpful and happy to talk about the center’s efforts. We had a great time.

¶We went to dinner a bit early, finishing probably a half an hour before the sunset. We walked around the marina a bit after dinner, biding our time until sunset, which turned out to be perfect.
