I turned to YouTube this morning for some inspiration on my photography. I’ve been asking the “why?” question a lot, lately - why do this?

This video from Rick Bebbington, which explores the existential question AI presents for photography at large, reminded me of the answer I always come back to when The Why Question creeps into my mind about my photography – it’s about the story. Rick did something that I thought was neat – he flipped the script and explored the issue from the perspective of AI imagery proponents, wondering about the biggest challenge they face to wider adoption.

His answer is simple: “There is no human story to any of it” and there never will be. AI can’t provide that, so there’s the value gap.

That reminded me of my long-standing answer to The Why Question: The Story. That’s why. It’s about the story.

Rick’s insight on the AI question, though, helped me realize that the story answer to my question has another dimension to it. It’s not just about the story told by the subject matter in the photograph. It’s also about the story of the photograph. He talks about the story of a landscape photographer suffering through “cold, rain, wind” to get the shot.

“That’s a story, and that’s something you can relate to and connect with.”

He’s right, and those stories are part of what I love about photography. I love the of stories just as much as I do the in stories.

Here’s the thing, though. I have to tell the stories of my photographs for people to connect with them. Can’t happen without that.

So there’s my challenge. I need to start telling the stories of my photographs. Let’s go.

Our nav directed us off of I-75 to avoid some traffic. Sometimes we trust the computer on the necessity of these detours, sometimes we don’t. We did this time, and drove along a winding two road highway for probably 5-10 miles through the last hills of southern Kentucky and into Jellico, Tennessee.

We’ve buzzed by Jellico dozens of times, of course, but have never stopped. It was nice to see. Looks like it might have been a bustling town back in the day, before the interstate came through, I’m guessing.

Renee and I are on the road early this morning, doing The Drive to St. Pete. It’s different these days with just the two of us and the dog in the car, but I still enjoy it. She’s not a huge fan, but I actually loook forward to it. A little windshield time has always been a good thing for me.

Yesterday’s pizza came back to haunt me in a big way today. Or maybe it was the froyo. Something upset my stomach and knocked me down for the entire afternoon. Renee and I had planned to go to Toledo Club for dinner tonight, but I’m not sure that’s a good idea right now.

Waking up after the release of the JFK assassination records and I have to say I’m not surprise with the silence. I haven’t seen any reports of an “a-ha!” document, but the silence so far could be due to the sheer volume of records released. It takes awhile to read or even skim 80,000 pages. Surely the summer and fall will bring new books on the subject.

Well, tomorrow could be interesting. Astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are returning to earth after their Thee Hour Tour adventure on the ISS (originally planned for one week their mission ultimately lasted nine months), and the JFK assassination files are apparently being released. Oh, and Trump and Putin are having a call to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, which actually sounds like it will be more about ending Ukrainian sovereignty.

It’s hard to know why you’d want to remove the human element from every aspect of social media, but Instagram seems to be going to try it anyway.

If AI is writing the posts, and the comments, what’s left for humans on social media? Likes, I guess.

Everything You Say to Your Echo Will Soon Be Sent to Amazon, and You Can’t Opt Out (wired.com)

In an email sent to customers today, Amazon said that Echo users will no longer be able to set their devices to process Alexa requests locally and, therefore, avoid sending voice recordings to Amazon’s cloud….Starting on March 28, recordings of every command spoken to the Alexa living in Echo speakers and smart displays will automatically be sent to Amazon and processed in the cloud.

There’s one tech company I trust with my information. It’s not Amazon.

It’s been raining pretty much all day, which is exactly the same as yesterday. We needed to get water this weekend. I was dreading it a bit but the rain turned out to be a good thing — the water filling station we use has two fillers, and usually there’s at least one other person there so you can’t use both fillers. Not today! It was pouring down rain but I was happy as a clam because I got to use both fillers the entire time.

There’s always a silver lining!

Today is a great day! The milk system on our Jura Z10 automatic coffeemaker, which we’ve owned for about two months, suddenly stopped working last week when I was in Florida (Renee was at home). Renee worried that she had done something wrong. I called Jura and they said a part might be defective, so they sent an entire new milk system to us.

I installed it, crossed my fingers, and made a latte.

Boom! Works perfectly. Lattes are back on the menu!

Wholesale prices for a dozen eggs now average $4.15, down $2.70 from the week before, the USDA’s Egg Markets Overview from Friday found. In the last week of February, a dozen eggs averaged as high as $8.05.

Let’s see how long it takes Waffle House (and others) to roll back that $0.50/egg surcharge.

We went down to Bowling Green to have breakfast with Jake this morning. Kermit’s has quickly become a favorite of ours. It can’t compete with the scenery of The Hangar at Albert Whitted airport in St. Pete, but it’s a great classic breakfast diner.

We’ve had some unseasonably warm weather lately, and today is really no different. It’s a little cooler than it has been, but still pleasant. I wore a sweatshirt while working on the cars, and even took it off for a bit while raising the tops. T-shirt weather in November, sort of nuts.

Renee and I are going for a walk here in a bit. I’m opting for the sweatshirt.

The Spitfires are mostly prepped for winter. I added stabilizer to the fuel tank and raised the tops and windows. I ran Jake’s a for a few minutes to move the stabilizer through the fuel system then went to do the same on mine only to find a dead battery. I must have left the radio on or something during my last drive. I’ll pull and test it tomorrow.
