On September 20, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan led a fleet of five ships and roughly 270 men out of the Spanish port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, bound for the Spice Islands on a voyage that became the first circumnavigation of the globe. Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines partway through the journey, and only one ship, the Victoria, and 18 of the original crew made it back to Spain three years later under Juan Sebastián Elcano. This map, from an 1891 biography of Magellan, traces the Victoria’s full track down the Atlantic, through the Strait of Magellan, across the Pacific to the Moluccas, and home around the Cape of Good Hope.
