Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, the tongue-in-cheek observance two friends in Albany, Oregon invented in 1995 and Dave Barry helped carry to national attention in 2002. This illustration, “Marooned,” is the work of Howard Pyle, the illustrator and writer largely responsible for the popular image of the pirate, down to the bandana, the earring, and the buried treasure chest. It appeared in his Book of Pirates, a 1921 posthumous collection of his pirate fiction and art, and shows a single marooned man hunched on an empty beach, his hat and pistol left in the sand, as a wave breaks on the horizon behind him.
