On August 23, 1541, Jacques Cartier arrived at the Iroquoian settlement of Stadacona (present-day Quebec City) on his third and final voyage to North America, this time aiming to found a permanent French colony. He judged the site too risky and pushed on to settle at Cap-Rouge instead, which collapsed within two years. This decorative 1893 print depicts the Grande Hermine, the ship Cartier commanded on his second and third voyages, flanked by cameo portraits of Cartier and his patron, King Francis I of France.
