¶The Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor officially opens to vehicle traffic today at noon. This after multiple delays, both expected (construction-related) and unexpected (COVID-related). And of course the Trump theatrics around renegotiating the deal “so a piece of the stateside tolls flow into American coffers” that arrived shortly after his return to office. I originally viewed those last minute delays as unexpected, but once they were tied to lobbying by the billionaire Trump donor and owner of the existing and aging Ambassador Bridge, I realized they should have been just as expected as construction delays.
¶And it’s early in the day! We’ve got nearly five hours to go before the new bridge officially opens to vehicle traffic today at noon. That leaves plenty of time for last minute…donations. And, not coincidentally I’m sure, Trump is scheduled to visit Detroit today ostensibly to tout his “efforts to rebuild the U.S. auto industry and expand domestic manufacturing”.
