The Ego v. Nuclear Modernization

In today's journal

On the hidden cost of Trump's new Air Force One, and a chilly-morning poolside breakfast.

The government spent hundreds of millions of dollars to purchase equipment needed to train pilots to fly the 747-8 plane so quickly, on top of the approximately $400 million cost of the upgrades that the administration has publicly acknowledged. The Pentagon has tried to mask the total price tag — including from Congress — by taking the funds from a classified budget for nuclear modernization.

If only there was a way to assign a dollar figure to Trump’s ego. Then there’s the opportunity cost of foregoing “nuclear modernization”, whatever that is.

It’s quite cool this morning, but we’re not letting that stop us from enjoying our usual summer Saturday breakfast by the pool. It’s sunny out, which helps. Renee’s got a blanket. I think it was in the high 50s when we first got out here. It’s a cozy 66 now.
