About today's feature image

On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur waded ashore on Leyte with his staff and Philippine President Sergio Osmeña a few hours after U.S. forces began the Battle of Leyte, fulfilling his 1942 promise to return to the Philippines. The Signal Corps photograph became one of the defining images of the Pacific War, and it is a good reminder of how much of history we know through a single frame. This image is a U.S. military photograph, available on Wikimedia Commons as a public domain work of the U.S. government.
