“The Leader of the Luddites” is a hand-colored satirical print published in London in May 1812, during the years when bands of English textile workers calling themselves Luddites smashed the knitting frames and looms they blamed for cutting wages. The figure waving his followers on, with a burning building behind him, is the imagined “General Ludd” the movement took its name from. It fits today’s word of the day, Luddite, which Merriam-Webster dates to 1811, the same year the steam ferry Juliana began service in New York harbor, and it echoes this week’s run of posts about machines that changed how people work.
