The Polo Grounds, home of the New York Giants, photographed in 1923 while its horseshoe of double-deck stands was being extended into the outfield. The finished horseshoe, with its short foul lines and cavernous center field, was the same park 31 years later. On September 29, 1954, in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, Willie Mays sprinted toward that distant wall and caught Vic Wertz’s long eighth-inning drive over his shoulder, then whirled and threw to keep Cleveland from scoring. The Catch preserved a 2-2 tie, the Giants won in 10 innings, and they went on to sweep the heavily favored Cleveland Indians.
